About Times Square Arts: Mission and Overview
Through its Public Art Program, the Times Square Alliance brings temporary high-quality, cutting-edge art and performance to Times Square’s public spaces, so that it is known globally as a place where ordinary people encounter authentic, ever-changing urban art in multiple forms and media.
Our innovations involve creating reusable templates to mount multi-site, multi-platform interventions in a compact, complex urban area for maximum effect; engaging the neighborhood’s creative community to move from the private to public realm; using new technologies to interpret Times Square’s intersection of commerce, communication and culture; and creating a new paradigm for a dynamic urban streetscape.
Since 2008, the Times Square Alliance has supported more than 30 temporary art events that include murals, sculptures, video screenings, dance, music and participatory artworks. Past projects and collaborations include Theatre For One, Creative Time's Key to the City, UrbanRemix, Liz Magic Laser's Flight, Shen Wei Dance Arts, Hip Hop Theater Festival, Play Me I'm Yours, and Performa '09.
The Times Square Public Art Program is made possible in part by the NYC Cultural Innovation Fund of the Rockefeller Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
